Colleague Spotlight – Anne McDonagh

09/01/2026

“At the end of the day, it's always about providing the best outcomes for our patients”

From the very beginning of her nursing career, Anne was driven by a simple but powerful instinct: to care deeply and to lead with purpose. She never imagined that her path which was rooted first in oncology wards and later in rental units, would evolve into a role where she now helps shape kidney care across Ireland. But looking back, every step prepared her for the impact she makes today.

Fifteen years ago, Anne joined Fresenius Medical Care UK & Ireland as Business Manager for Ireland. It was a natural progression for someone whose passion for patient-centred care had grown alongside her fascination with the technology that makes dialysis possible. Long before she stepped into leadership, Anne had already spent years at the heart of clinical practice, where she discovered the power of innovation in improving renal care.

Over the next thirteen years, Anne gained extensive experience working across multiple NHS hospitals in London and Hertfordshire before pursuing a post-graduate qualification in Renal Nursing. Each role strengthened her understanding of the realities patients face and the critical role that equipment, systems, and specialist staff play in their treatment.

When Anne moved back to Ireland, she saw an opportunity with FME UK&I to transition into a dual leadership role overseeing haemodialysis in-centre therapy and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy in the Irish market. Eager to apply her renal nursing expertise and technical knowledge to a role within leadership, Anne joined FME UK&I in February 2010 and hasn’t looked back since, proudly holding this title for 15 years.

To mark her 15-year milestone, Anne was presented with a voucher in recognition of her dedication. She and her husband took the chance to get away for a night – a time to celebrate, reflect, and recharge after a remarkable career so far.

Day-to-day, Anne leads the development and execution of business plans, identifies market trends, and ultimately positions FME UK&I products effectively across Ireland. No two days of work are ever the same. From overseeing the expanding portfolio of FME UK&I into the Irish market to driving business growth in line with regional strategy, Anne keeps operations running smoothly. Much of her work involves driving and travel, which has allowed her to visit new places and experience Ireland in ways she hadn’t ever imagined.

For Anne, one of the most rewarding parts of her role has been meeting and connecting with stakeholders, introducing them to new product offerings, understanding their unique needs and showcasing how FME UK&I can make a real difference. Guiding a project from initial concept to final delivery is a huge undertaking, but for Anne, “nothing beats the excitement of seeing it succeed and finding fulfilment in the process”.

Anne draws on her nursing background every day, especially as patient empowerment remains a central aspect of her work. She often reflects on her time in clinical practice, where she learned firsthand that one of the unique strengths of in-centre renal care is the meaningful connection patients build with healthcare professionals. With this perspective, Anne keeps patient experience front of mind, particularly as new products are introduced into renal units across the country.

Anne is passionate about encouraging young people to explore careers in renal healthcare. “Absolutely go for it,” she says. “Working in healthcare is very rewarding and there’s always something new to be learned – and working in renal care is an exciting speciality. If it’s something you think you’d enjoy, you’ve got to try it to see.”

From frontline nurse to Business Manager for Ireland, Anne’s path shows just how many opportunities the renal field offers. Through every role and every challenge, one thing has always guided her: the belief that patients must remain at the heart of everything.
