“Patients are at the forefront of everything we do”
Since 2005, Zeena has dedicated her career to building strong relationships on the frontline of healthcare through her work in community pharmacy. While she valued the fast-paced nature of the role, over time she found herself drawn to new challenges and began to explore other areas within healthcare.
Renal care was not an area that had previously been on her radar. Like many pharmacists, it wasn’t something she had been heavily exposed to during her studies. However, when Zeena was approached with an opportunity to join Fresenius Medical Care UK&I, she was excited by the prospect of stepping into a field that would help her grow into new areas in her career. Over time, she discovered just how much there was to learn and was motivated by contributing to care that makes a real difference to people living with chronic kidney disease.
What initially started as a step into the unknown soon became a career path she could not imagine leaving behind. In her early role, Zeena was closely involved in the day-to-day realities of prescription management, from screening and releasing orders to managing patient safety incidents. That attention to detail gave her a first-hand view of the various moving parts behind every interaction, and how even small inefficiencies can create a ripple effect through the wider care system. This drew her towards the bigger picture, sparking a growing curiosity about how these processes could be strengthened to support those undergoing life-saving treatment.
Over the past ten years, Zeena has grown alongside the business, gradually shifting away from operational work into one where she helps shape the systems that underpin the delivery of care across the organisation. In doing so, she plays a fundamental role in creating a smoother, more efficient experience for care teams, ensuring they can focus their attention on where it matters most – the people.
Today, much of Zeena’s work focuses on supporting large-scale, business-wide initiatives, including the launch of ‘kinexus Orders’, a web-based portal designed to modernise the management of electronic prescriptions. The platform enables nurses, pharmacists and people living with chronic kidney disease to securely access prescriptions, material orders, and cycler data records throughout the treatment process.
Working closely with colleagues during the final stages of the project, Zeena drew on her expertise to validate the platform ahead of the launch. Acting as a clinical reviewer, she helped ensure that the system aligned with regulatory requirements, providing oversight on elements that support safe and accurate prescribing. Through this process, she helped giveclinical teams confidence that the foundations of their systems are designed to uphold the highest standards of care.
For Zeena, the most cherished part of the process was understanding what truly works for nurses, ultimately grounding the product in the realities of everyday care. Beyond this, Zeena was motivated by the real value of making a difference to people’s lives. People living with chronic kidney disease no longer have to spend time waiting for phone calls to understand what happens next, providing them with reassurance and peace of mind on their treatment journey. The next step is the pilot phase in June, which will mark the launch of the Kinexus platform in peritoneal dialysis.
Zeena’s favourite aspect of her role is that those with chronic kidney disease remain firmly at the heart of her work. This connection is what first drew her into healthcare, giving her the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives during some of their most challenging moments. Looking ahead, Zeena hopes that providing a more modern dialysis experience will support them in feeling more in control of their treatment.
Alongside the work itself, it is ultimately the people around her who have made a lasting impact. Fresenius Medical Care is a large global organisation, with a mix of different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. That diversity is precisely what makes the organisation so special to her, with Zeena describing the team as having a strong “family feel”. Whilst everyone comes from different disciplines, they are united by the same shared mission to help those with chronic kidney disease live fuller, more independent lives.
