What if artificial intelligence (AI) could help make kidney-friendly meal planning not only more efficient, but also more personal? In this Research in Brief, Sheng-Han Yueh, Data Scientist in the Artificial Intelligence Translational Innovation Hub at the Renal Research Institute (RRI), shares how researchers developed an innovative AI-assisted system designed to support dietitians and people living with kidney disease as they navigate complex dietary requirements. Drawing from a database of more than 300 kidney-friendly recipes, the system helps users curate meals based on both clinical needs and personal preferences, from nutrient limits to cultural tastes and favorite cuisines.
The research highlights a simple but powerful insight: Effective meal plans need to be more than nutritionally sound. By combining AI-powered recipe discovery with dietitian oversight, the two-step workflow enables personalized meal planning that is flexible, practical, and more likely to be followed. This work reflects a holistic approach to kidney care, recognizing that successful nutrition support is a critical complement to dialysis treatment and an important contributor to overall health and quality of life.
